Diego International Wine Competition in October 2003. Robert
brings a wealth of experience to the task of building upon
the solid foundation the SDIWC has established over the
past two decades. Robert was the founding Director of the
Monterey Wine Competition in 1994 and continues to serve
as Director and Chief Judge of this major international
wine competition. Robert is a frequent judge at wine and
spirits competitions around the globe. A career journalist,
Robert has worked as an editor, reporter or columnist for

His
passion for the wines of the world dates to the early 1970s
when Robert was a young reporter living in New York City
and working for Newsday. He moved to California in 1983
to take a position with the San Diego Union, and it was
there that his interest in California wines and New World
wines blossomed. Robert travels the globe for his Wine Talk
column, regularly visiting the historic vineyards and wineries
of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal as well as making stops
in the emerging wine regions of Australia, New Zealand,
Chile, Argentina and South Africa. Robert also hosts two
weekly radio shows, Whitley On Wine and the Gourmet Club,
for World Talk Radio (www.worldtalkradio.com).
Many of Robert's columns and wine reviews, as well as links
to his radio shows, can be accessed through his website,

Robert's vision for the San Diego National Wine Competition
is to open it to international wines, allowing wines from
the United States to compete with and shine amongst the
best in the world. Robert is a native of Washington, D.C.
